In the UK today, there are increasing numbers of long term sick children.

  • Every day, at least two children are diagnosed with a liver disease.
  • Every thirty minutes, a baby is born with a genetic disorder.
  • Every week, three children with cystic fibrosis will die.
  • Every year, thousands of families struggle to cope.

WellChild is a national charity dedicated to helping sick children and their families across the UK.

The WellChild services

Our mission is to help as many children and young people as we can through Care, Support and Research:

  • WellChild Children's Nurses - are helping hundreds of children across the UK living at home with long term serious illnesses, and supporting their families too.
  • WellChild Helpline - is answering questions about children's health. Every day, our helpline nurse professionals receive calls, texts and emails from children, young people, parents, carers and professionals with questions about child health. When you are worried about a child or have a personal worry about your health, you do not always want to go to your doctor, and it can be very difficult to know where to turn. Our helpline is a unique one-stop source of help. Tel: 0808 801 0330
  • WellChild Helping Hands - brings volunteers from companies to complete one-off practical projects in the homes of chronically ill children, where the families are often overwhelmed by the continual demands of caring for a sick child 24/7. Our teams of enthusiastic volunteers have painted bedrooms and made-over gardens to make them wheelchair accessible - making a difference not only to the sick child but to the whole family. Projects are done in various locations, wherever we have a family in need and a team willing to help.
  • WellChild Research - WellChild doctors, nurses and researchers are working in UK hospitals to find answers to a range of childhood illnesses and conditions from liver disease, diabetes and celebral palsy, to heart conditions and rarer conditions such as Batten Disease and Wolfram Syndrome.

A big job to do - which is why we are so grateful to all those people who decide to support our work with their donations, of whatever size.

Working with Clothes Aid

We are delighted to be partnering with Clothes Aid and hope very much that the bags will be full and their collections successful so we can carry on supporting sick children - and achieve even more in the years ahead.

But in the meantime, here is a word form a parent whose son is under the care of one of our nurses:

"I can honestly say that, without this help, I don't know how I would have coped. My family and friends were unable to help because they didn't feel able to deal with the special nursing care he needed. I really was desperate. I think that without the extra help from the Children's Nurse, I would have ended up ill myself with stress and depression, and I can't thank them enough for being there when I needed them".
